Silicone is made from silicone elastomers and retains flexibility resilience and tensile strength over a wide temperature range. It is resistant to extreme temperature variations and is extremely pliable and elastic. Silicone features high purity and long services life, as well as being resistant to chemicals and abrasion. Silicone has excellent clarity and strength and is non-reactive to body tissues and fluids. It is also moisture resistant and feature low toxicity.

Silicone elastomers can be cross-linked using a variety of cure methods. For extruded tubing, two methods of curing are most common – peroxide (free-radical) initiated and platinum (addition-cure) catalyzed. When selecting which method is best for your application, there are several characteristics to consider including:

• Chemical resistance of the fluid being transferred
• Performance characteristics
• Visual differences

Platinum-Cured Silicone

Platinum-cured silicone is an addition-cured formula, meaning the formulation contains zero by-products. Platinum-cured silicone is created by milling two-equal parts of silicone-elastomer – A (platinum catalyst) and B (crosslinking part). Platinum-cured silicone is translucent in color and has a lower volume of extractables.

Peroxide-Cured Silicone

Peroxide-cured silicone is a free-radical formula that utilizes a peroxide catalyst in milling to progress the curing process. When exposed to high temperatures, the silicone becomes cured and the peroxide additives break down. Peroxide-cured silicone is opaque in color and offers superior spallation characteristics.
